Tax Tips To Gain New Clients During Tax Season

The purpose of this blog series is to share creative ways to attract and gain new clients (more leads), so that you can use them in your own business.

Our previous post touched on tax tips to help market your tax services , and as we continue to gather more leads, it's important that we work together in seeing what works and what can be improved. That way, tax professionals can be more effective and focus on the strategies that will help you improve your tax business.

Offer an Early Bird Special

This is a good way to start advertising your office now, by offering an early bird special to any customer who comes in to prepare their taxes before a certain deadline. Make sure to give people plenty of notice about the early bird special and when it ends.

I would even consider asking for a commitment, so that you can lock a special rate for early customers.

For example, if you normally charge $250 for your tax prep services, and instead advertise that if you commit early, you will charge $150. The beauty of this is that you start to get people committed early, and get off to a great start once you can start filing.

If you're asking yourself, "what type of commitment should I get from them to lower the price", then you're on the right track.

I've worked with tax professionals who ask for a "down payment" on their prep fees. In other words, you can ask for a $20 or $30 commitment from them to lock in the price.

Now, let me ask you something.

If you commit $20 (this contributes to the $150 new tax prep fee rate, so you'd owe $130), would you be more likely to come back and get your taxes done there, or say "forget the $20" and go somewhere else?

The idea is to try different things to figure out what works. In this case, you're leveraging the tax prep fee with a commitment to file early.

Reach out to Local Businesses

One of the main reasons people are turning to online tax preparation software is because they don't have time to leave work to go to an office and have a professional help them.

While adding "after hours" appointments is certainly one way to tackle this obstacle, another is to offer to set up "pop up" services in an office nearby for a day.

Work with companies that employ a lot of people, set up a certain day (or days) when you will come and prepare taxes for their employees, maybe even just document intake and the rest can be handled via a mobile app, if you use one.

People are more likely to take advantage of your services when you are sitting in the break room, ready and willing to work!

Think College Students

If your business is near a college campus, reach out to the students. Many undergraduates (or even graduates) will be filling out their taxes for the first time, and can use all the help they can get.

You can advertise student rates, or even reach out to campus and offer another one of those pop up days for staff and students.

You can even ask if the accounting majors would like to set up a clinic with your guidance! Students can also be a good lead source since they can refer their own parents to you, who more than likely also need to file a tax return.
