The stunning atrium at the Marriott Marquis Atlanta, one of the hosts to this year’s IRS Nationwide Tax Forum
OK, so “extravaganza” is probably the last word that comes to mind when thinking about the IRS. Getting psyched for the 2012 IRS Nationwide Tax Forum might seem like a fairly tall order, then. Nevertheless, this year’s series of industry trade shows — being held in six U.S. cities over the course of the next couple months — promises to feature some really useful (and even exciting) new material. And as anyone who’s been to these forums in the past will be able to tell you, they provide vital information and training for enrolled agents, accountants, and tax preparers looking to stay current and brush up on the latest news and developments in the profession.
Sure, attending any one of these events may be optional. It should be said, however, that it’s highly in your interest to do so. You’re no doubt aware of the recent legislation that’s been passed, requiring Continuing Professional Education courses for all registered tax preparers. By taking a trip down to one of these Tax Forums, you (along with your colleagues and staff) can take advantage of the complimentary CPE courses and numerous training workshops that are offered on-site. You can easily knock the mandatory 15 hours of CPE credits out of the way by signing up for two hours’ worth of Ethics seminars, three separate hour-long sessions on Federal Tax Law Updates, and finally finish up with ten further hours on Other Federal Laws. Access to these programs is included in the registration costs; you just have to scan your ID badge once you get there to confirm. If you think about it, you’ll have to take care of these courses sooner or later anyway in order to get (re)certified. So why not sooner, rather than later?
Besides, there are plenty of other things you can do in between these lectures and seminars. The IRS Tax Forums present a great opportunity for you to network with other specialists at banquets and receptions, as well as catch a sneak peek of cutting-edge products and top-of-the-line technologies that are in the pipeline. At each conference, the schedule has arranged two evening get-togethers for Tuesday and Wednesday. All sorts of newfangled gadgets and thingamabobs will be on display at the various exhibition booths throughout the day, so a few words of advice: Do your homework! You can read up on the different companies and organizations that will be there through the exhibitor directory. A little background is all that’s needed to get an idea of what you might want to see first. Sketch out a little itinerary and to-do list, if you have the time. You won’t regret it.
