Refundo's FinovateSpring 2013 Trip - Day 1

Day 1 of our Finovate trip was mad fun. We woke up early to catch a 6am flight to SFO. After touchdown, grabbed a delicious breakfast at the Millbrae Pancake House to refuel before meeting with one of our partners.

Then, shot up to the SF Design Concourse Center for rehearsal. With all the energy and setup going on, we were getting super excited. Watched a few cool run-throughs before Roger took the stage for a solid run.

Headed back to hotel and rested a bit thinking we were done for the day. Started wondering where to go for dinner. But then heard back from Nail Your Pitch Silicon Valley meetup (a big, local group) late that we were cleared to present that night!

Jumped, showered and headed to Redwood City for the event. Knew we wouldn’t make it on time - we left hotel at 5:30 and they wanted us there by 6 -  but were hoping for the best.

We arrived at 6:30, in time for the 7pm presentation start time. Found Nick, who after some wrangling was super understanding in getting us on the list. *phew*

Networking session was fun, and then the main event began. After some sponsorship thank yous and messages, Adeo Ressi from Founder Institute turned out to be the highlight of the night.

He started off by giving some well-thought pitching advice to entrepreneurs. The rest of the night was comedy relief as he likes to joke a lot. The other panel judges included Roger Royce (a lawyer) and Jon Soberg (a VC from Blumberg Capital).

The format was 60 sec pitch and then scores and feedback from the judges. The list had about 33 startups on it, and it was great seeing the diversity of products and services. Very different than what we’re used to.

We were #28. And about halfway through, they announced that not everyone would be able to pitch because of timing issues. Our hearts sank.

But, with 2 presenters left, Nick pulled through for us again! Recognizing that Refundo and another company were coming from way out of town, he asked the two remaining presenters if they would kindly donate their spot to us (they could present next month).

They graciously agreed at which point I pushed Roger from his seat to take the first spot :) It was a great opportunity for him to address a crowd of 200 and 3 tough judges.

We got some good feedback. And at the end of the night, we were honored to have been voted 3rd place which includes $1000 credit for Founders Institute. Late night dinner at Elephant Bar to cap off the night.
