How to Protect Your Clients and Your Time Next Tax Season

You stop. In a matter of seconds, your hand hits your forehead, your nostrils flare, and your eyes close shut. Another roadblock. You try to search for some degree of optimism; maybe from a friend that thinks he knows best, but that’s not changing anything. Eyes still shut, you envision yet another roadblock.

Audit assistance is a tricky task. You can be promised full protection and undivided attention,  but if you’re not seeing results and feeling the above mentioned frustration, find someone who can. We take pride in our ability to take it a step further. Rest assured, no one knows audits like we do.

As human beings, we tend to fear the unknown. More than that, we fear things that are out of our control. So, when you are unexpectedly presented with an IRS audit letter, what’s your first response? We all understand tax professionals possess the necessary knowledge to understand tax jargon and principles, but put yourself in your clients shoes. Where do they even begin to tackle the issue?

Now, it’s normal for your clients to feel nervous and confused in the event of an audit. It’s hard to imagine having to fight for something that earlier gave you security and peace of mind. Still, as tax professionals, it’s important to find solutions and answers. Here are two things you need to consider when thinking of a solution: Time and Money.

Imagine this: It’s the middle of the day when a familiar face walks into your office. It’s not everyday you get to see a tax client after tax season, so with a smiling yet surprised face, you greet your client. After an exchange of pleasantries, you see the letter. Being in the industry for so long, you know exactly where this is headed. Your first instinct is to help. But you quickly realize the amount of time and energy spent on getting this fixed. No sooner than you realize the time factor, you remember the cost of tax liabilities to your customer. Then, for fear of losing a client’s loyalty, you utter, “Let me figure something out”.

The audit process can be more or less described as a maze. There’s no greater frustration than going through a whole process and realizing you missed something. It almost feels like being in the wrong line at the DMV. Time spent. Energy spent. Let’s not forget your frustration at an all time high.

For a team to be successful, there needs to be structure and approach in every department. For example, one team can be focused on growing revenue streams, while another makes sure you remain relevant in the minds of consumers. Each team has an absolute advantage in getting things accomplished, depending on their skill sets. Having said that, an audit assistance team does the dirty work for you. They go through each case with grit and ensure the process is seamless and easy. It’s almost like having a teammate that dives on the floor for loose balls in basketball, or goes up for every rebound, or even takes the occasional charging foul.

For those who didn’t get the reference, imagine the most sacrificial teammate or person you’ve ever worked with.

Along with the infinite labyrinth, your client could be subject to additional taxes and fees. Even though you know you do your job well, mistakes do happen. For example, have you ever gone through an email over and over again with hopes of not finding any spelling or grammatical errors? Taking it a step further, what if this email was being sent to all your clients? You’ll find that a simple mistake can happen, even after checking multiple times. The worst part is knowing there’s nothing you can do about it.

Unlike mass emails, you can utilize audit assistance to protect yourself if a legitimate error occurs. Audit assistance services, for example, cover a substantial portion of additional taxes and fees. This helps put your clients mind at ease and gives them a sense of security. Offering it doesn’t discredit your work, but rather reinforces your commitment to helping them.

Finding ways to separate yourself from competition will ensure your success. Your clients will appreciate you mentioning it and if something were to occur, will save them from a very long headache. For this reason, we are proud to announce  that Refundo will soon introduce the arrival of our very own audit assistance service. It will help bring security to your client’s lives and continue to demonstrate our capabilities as a multifaceted company.

Don’t miss our launch at the 2015 Refundo Summer Roadshow. We can’t wait to introduce all the exciting new products and services we have lined up to make your tax season better. Hope to see you there!
